What do you need to do to become a UK taxi driver in 2018.

First off you need to prepare yourself by studying your local area I would suggest buying a local Collins type map so you can study it as if you were preparing for a driving theory test.

I would then start to learn the streets and major roads, when schools are police stations, fire and ambulance stations and start to drill it into your head. I would then use a service like google maps to make note of local landmarks bars/clubs & resurants. (You can hadily add this into your map book to save time later)

It is worth noting you will need to be over 18 and have hel a UK or EU licence for between 12 months and 3 years depending on your council, you will also need to pass criminal record checks or a D&B check and will have to pass a medical.

The second part you need to consider is to get your driving back to driving test standard as you may require a advanced driving test in your bourough. So try to revert to push and pull with lots of mirror checks as a big tip to improve for your test. Also check your local authoritys taxi rules.

Once you feel both requirements are met you can apply for your local council tests for your badge. Usualy this is a multiple choice theory with sections on taxi regulations and routes to places. Book your driving test and once you pass both sections you will have to pay a small fee for your badge.

Once licenced theres two paths to be a gackney driver or a private hire driver.. a hackney driver can puck up from the street and be flagged down a private hire driver is pre-booked only.

If you go alone thats a whole new section I may blog about later or to work for a company is the alternative route. You can expect to pay hefty public liability insurance in your first year mjne was £3785 but fortunatly it reduces over time.
